August 2009: Diagnosis of multiple myeloma with amyloid involvement (confirmed by bone marrow biopsy), St. Mark's Hospital, Salt Lake City, UT

November 2009: First round of chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant (BMT) - first "reboot", Huntsman Cancer Hospital, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT

December 2009: Returned home from first round

March 2010: Second round of chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant (BMT) - second "reboot", Huntsman Cancer Hospital, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT

April 2010: Returned home from second round

May 2010: Brief (several day) hospitalization due to complications, Huntsman Cancer Hospital, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT

June 2010: Month-long hospitalization due to complications, Huntsman Cancer Hospital, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT

June 2010: 35th birthday - 11 months alive since cancer-diagnosis

July 2010: Remission announced

August 2011: Third round of chemotherapy (low-dose maintenance) initiated as an outpatient, Huntsman Cancer Hospital, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT

November 2011: Week-long hospitalization due to pneumonia, Huntsman Cancer Hospital, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT

January 2012: Week-long hospitalization due to chemotherapy-induced dehydration, Huntsman Cancer Hospital, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT

January 2012: End of low-dose maintenance chemotherapy

June 2012: 37th birthday - 35 months alive since cancer-diagnosis

July 2012: Married 17 years to my (first and only) wife

January 2013: One year anniversary of the end of chemotherapy

June 2013: 38th birthday - 47 months alive since cancer-diagnosis

July 2013: Married 18 years to my (first and only) wife 

November 2013: First major immune-system related illness:  Shingles.  Avoided hospitalization but was required to maintain home quarantine.  Lasted approximately three weeks. 

December 2013: First rise in cancer markers.  After a biopsy, speculated (and then confirmed in Feb 2014 that it was due to Shingles)

January 2014: Second year anniversary of the end of chemotherapy

January 2014: Agreed to serve as Associate Director, School of Computing under Professor Ross Whitaker (Director)

February 2014: Cancer Marker Speculation Confirmed (due to Shingles).  Still considered in remission

June 2014: 39th birthday - 59 months alive since cancer-diagnosis

July 2013: Married 19 years to my (first and only) wife

July 2014: Promoted to (Full) Professor of Computing, School of Computing, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT

November 2014: Five year anniversary since diagnosis and start of treatment.  

January 2015: Third year anniversary of the end of chemotherapy

June 2015: 40th birthday (very special as I never expected to make it this far in 2010)  - 71 months alive since cancer-diagnosis 

July 2015: Married 20 years to my (first and only) wife 

November 2015: Sixth year anniversary of first "reboot".   Definitely a month of Thanksgiving

June 2016: 41th birthday - 83 months alive since cancer-diagnosis

July 2016: Married 21 years to my (first and only) wife  

August 2016: Significant Motorcycle Accident (Broken shoulder, collarbone, ribs and ruptured spleen).  Fortunate to still be alive - another form of "reboot"

November 2016: Fourth year anniversary of the end of "reboot" chemotherapy

January 2017: Five year anniversary of the end of (all) chemotherapy

June 2017: 42nd birthday - 95 months alive since cancer-diagnosis

July 2017: Married 22 years to my (first and only) wife 

August 2017: One year anniversary of my motorcycle accident

November 2017: Fifth year anniversary of the end of "reboot" chemotherapy

January 2018: Five year anniversary of the end of (all) chemotherapy

June 2018: 43rd birthday - 107 months alive since cancer-diagnosis

July 2018: Married 23 years to my (first and only) wife

August 2018: Agreed to serve as Interim Director of the Scientific Computing and Imaging (SCI) Institute, University of Utah

November 2019: Seventh year anniversary of the end of "reboot" chemotherapy

January 2020: Seven year anniversary of the end of (all) chemotherapy. Entering my 11th year anniversary of my first "reboot" chemotherapy

June 2020: 45th birthday - 131 months alive since cancer-diagnosis

July 2020: Married 25 years to my (first and only) wife

November 2020: Eighth year anniversary of the end of "reboot" chemotherapy

January 2021: Eighth year anniversary of the end of (all) chemotherapy. Entering my 12th year anniversary of my first "reboot" chemotherapy

June 2021: 46th birthday - 143 months alive since cancer-diagnosis

June 2021: Unanticipated emergency surgery due to a knee infection.  Given my history (above), I am grateful to be in the care of wise and skilled physicians.

July 2021: Married 26 years to my (first and only) wife 

August 2021: Five year anniversary of my motorcycle accident

November 2021: Ninth year anniversary of the end of "reboot" chemotherapy

January 2022: Ninth year anniversary of the end of (all) chemotherapy. Entering my 13th year anniversary of my first "reboot" chemotherapy

June 2022: 47th birthday - 155 months alive since cancer-diagnosis

July 2022: Married 27 years to my (first and only) wife

November 2024: Learned that I am in A-Fib (Atrial Fibrillation), a common problem for Amyloid survivors.  Hopefully resolved in December 2024.
